6E: Grammar #1: Past Perfect (due Sunday, Feb. 2)

You had an appointment with me yesterday after class. You didn't come because something happened which prevented you from coming. What happened? Be CREATIVE. Extra points if you make me laugh.

Use the past perfect, but REMEMBER: With before and after, the past perfect isn't necessary because the relationship between the events is clear.

  2. ‘’I had planned to keep the appointment with you Holly, when it was morning. Everything was ready before the class. Unfortunately, during the class time I ate lots of chocolate and drunk lots of coffee. While I was eating last piece of my chocolate, I felt terrible stomachache. After class my friends took me to the hospital. I had opened my eyes, and luckily there were still twenty minutes to our meeting. Suddenly, I jumped from the bed and started to run. More the pitty, when I arrived the parking area, my car had been stolen. I called the police but it was too late to catch the time with you. I was so sorry, when you had dropped me from the class.’’ How is it for extra points :p

10 extra points. I love the chocolate and the coffee and the hospital and the stolen car. Sorry that I had to drop you from the class :(

  3. By the time I had my appointment with you, I had gone to other classroom to checking I wanted to ask you about grammar. It was very fast. I didn't know what happened but when I tried to leave I couldn't the door never opened. Immediately, I called my sister and she didn't answer and I could not call you because you have no telephone, so I was desperate. I had been there almost 30 min. Suddenly, when I tried one more time, the door opened. Whaaat?? The door always was open?? I didn't understand what happened, yet something strange happened I am not crazy. The door was closed because I tried more than twice, and never opened!! I had not eaten, so maybe I had no strength. Really, I don't believe that. However, It is the only explication I have. Finally, I arrived our appointment, but you had already left the classroom. You didn't wait for me. Now, I continue confusing about grammar and what happened with the door :(

      EXPLANATION (not explication)

Now I continue TO BE CONFUSED

Melsy, I can try to help you with your grammar confusion, but I don't think I'll be able to help you with your door confusion ;)

  4. Let me write it in the form of a letter ;)

    Dear Holly,

I'm writing to say that I'm really sorry for not coming to our appointment yesterday after class. You must be very angry but just let me explain.
Believe me, I wanted to be creative and made up an interesting story explaining why I didn't come to your house as I had promised. It should have been something like I got lost to a deserted road after getting out of the class. There had been nobody around when I saw an old gypsy lady. She gave me a delicate little bottle, said that it could change my life, and left me alone with my hesitancy. After all, I drank it. I felt dizzy immediately, so I sat down for a while. Before I could realize, I was right in front of the classroom. It got all dark, I missed our date, I decided to go home to write you an email (because you don't have a phone! haha), and blah, blah, blah.

I wished that were what had happened! ;) However, the truth was after getting out of class, I met an old friend from secondary school. There's no need to say, he has become so much of a cute guy that I totally forgot our appointment. Thus, when he asked me to go to a coffee shop nearby, I didn't even have to think twice. I'm so sorry. But you know, when it comes to love, people tend to act crazily, and I'm not an exception :). Moreover, that was love at first sight. No, more exactly, I meant love at" second" sight. I hadn't felt for him back when we were in the same class! lol.

So Holly, please forgive me. Next time, I won't break my promise for any reason. I'm sure! :)

    Love,

    Chi

IN THE END, I drank it.

I will forgive you this time, Chi, even though I'm very hurt that you chose a good looking young guy over your ancient dinosaur teacher :)

      Great story. Terrific writing.

  5. Actually, I had planned everything the day before the meeting. Next morning, I got up early. I had eaten some fruits as breakfast; I went out from my room. Everything was good. The weather was sunny and it looked like warm but I had been freezing till got on the bus. That was weird. I had arrived earlier than you came to class. We finished classes one by one. Everything was going right. There was only one thing left that I had to do. I had checked the time and I got in to room. Then I felt the weird cold again. Suddenly, I opened my eyes. My room window was open and the inside area was so cold. That time, I realized that I was in dream. As a result, my mentality had been in meeting but in reality, I was sleeping. :=)

My MIND had been at the meeting...

CUTE EXCUSE. If you get a bad grade in my class, check to see if your window is open :D

  6. Good Morning Miss Holly

I'm writing to apologize because I missed the meeting yesterday. I'm aware we had planed this meeting the day before but unfortunately I had had a problem with my car. It had broken on my way there and I couldn't be there on time as planed. I had thought in calling you but unfortunately I couldn't because had no credit on my phone. I'd like to fix it, could we please set up a new meeting for tomorrow morning? Please let me know if you are available. Thanks for your comprehension.

When did you have the problem with your car? It seems from this sentence that you had the problem in the same time period that we planned the meeting!

      Thanks for your UNDERSTANDING.

A problem with your car is a very reasonable excuse; however, its not a very creative one :(

  7. I should showed up in your office this afternoon, but there were some accidents had happened today. My brother had driven my car to school when I woke up this morning, so I had to take bus to school. And the tragedy had occurred, I found my dog had laid on the floor and didn't move. I was so nervous, so I took him to the vet. The vet told me that my dog had eaten too much food and his stomach can not digest them, that's why he felt sick. After I came home, I realized why my dog got stomachache. I believed my kitchen had been robbed by my dog, it ate all of my food. And also it ate my textbook and the notes I had planned to discuss with you.
So, I needed to clean my room first and rewrite my notes then I rushed to bus stop. Unfortunately, the bus had already leaved. When I arrived the office, it had already five minutes late and you had leaved for another class.

    1. I SHOULD HAVE SHOWN up...

"My brother had driven my car to school when I woke up this morning,"
      This is unclear.
Better: My brother drove my car to school BEFORE I woke up this morning.

And then the tragedy OCCURRED. I found my dog LAYING on the floor, NOT MOVING.

...and his stomach COULDN'T digest them.

the bus had already LEFT (STUDY YOUR IRREGULAR VERBS!!!)
...you HAD LEFT for another class.

Wow. Your dog ate your textbook and your notes? It sounds like your dog would like to get an education!

  8. Holly, I’m so sorry to keep you waiting for me, but I couldn't come to our appointment even though I tried really hard to be there. Actually, I was planning to come but my day was awful. You won’t believe me if I tell you. However, by the time you called the first time to check the appointment, I had been detained by a cop for speeding and shortly after I had to pay the tickets in the court. By the second time you called, I had been detained again because I hit a pol in the street near home. You may wonder why? because a stupid cat was running in the street, so i had push the breaks so hard that I lose control and when i realized, I had already hit the pol. For that reason, I spend two more ours dealing again with the insurance and everything, When I finally arrived, you had already left the room and you probably had been driving for a while back to your home.

      the pole or the police???

      HOURS (not ours)

Well, I'm exhausted after reading your story. At least they didn't catch you with drugs because then you'd be in even bigger trouble ;)

  9. It is right. I was trying to say "the pole" sorry about that i did not know how to spell it. About the brakes and hours my bad. I forgot to check it before posting it. Did you have any other comment about my use of the past perfect tense?

  10. Dear Profesor Cin,

Since I had experienced several weird cases, I couldn't attend our appointment. I don't know how to apologize, but let me explain my excuse.
Everything started in our class, which we covered simple past tense with you in the day before our appointment. In that class, in result of you gave us an example about your sport life, I got motivated and decided to start doing sport. Our appointment day morning, after I got up at 3:30 am, I run about 10 miles until 4:30 am. Then I continued with 40 miles cycling, and finally I swam about a mile. By the time 7 am, my missions had been already completed. I was content thanks to achieving my target which could be your least point. On the other hand, I was just a little bit exhausted probably depending on lack of condition. I was planing to go to school by bus because I had sold my car. I had still 30 minutes to catch the bus, and it was enough for a enjoyable nap. After that, as you can guess, I fall a deep sleep. When I woke up, I had already missed first three class, and I had just enough time to catch our appointment. Therefore, I rushed as much as possible and finally caught the bus. Curiously enough, I was still sleepy. I had about an hour to get school, and also it is enough a lovely nap. As soon as I woke up, I checked my watch. Fortunately, 45 minutes had just passed. However, when I looked out of the window, I couldn't recognize where I was. Suddenly, I saw "Katy Mills Mall", and realized that I had taken totally wrong bus with haste.
I don't know whether you will forgive me or not, but if you will forgive me and decide to give me another appointment, I'll be available every time. Since I gave up doing sport in that day, this time I won't miss our meeting.
    Sincerely
    M.Kemal CAKICI

Since I had several strange experiences...

"in result of you gave us an example"
As a result of you giving us an example

      "start doing sport"
      start exercising

      ...3:30 a.m., I RAN about 10 miles...

      "had been already completed."
      had already been completed

      "I had still 30 minutes"
      I still had 30 minutes

      "I fall a deep sleep."
I FELL INTO a deep sleep.

      "Curiously enough"
      NICE!!!

"and also it is enough a lovely nap."
      ?

This is a good story, but I'm not sure I believe you. You should have brought me a gift from the Katy Mills Mall as evidence. Just a small gift would have been fine (gold, silver, I'm very easy to please).

  11. By the time, I let Holly wait for the appointment, I had run so quick to SBM buiding for free lunch. I suddently fell down because of stucking stones on the street. At that time , a lot of students looked at me with a full ice-cream face. I wished I had dissapeared on the earth. I was like a crown. My friend had asked to buy for her an ice-cream when I went to SBM building. I realized that I shouldn't ignore Holly's appointment instead of free lunch. Since If I had come to see Holly , she could have given more useful thinngs than a free lunch with the ice-cream face.

What is a full ice-cream face? I like the expression but I've never heard it before!

      A crown or a clown?

You know, Uyen, in America we say "there is no such thing as a free lunch," meaning that everybody wants something from you. You're right. You should have come to the appointment with me :D

  12. As ponctuel as usual , i finished class at 12h30 and waiting for my appointment with you . When i was in class, i had been thinking what to do until 2pm . I went to have lunch in my usual restaurant , when a guy came straight to me asking me if i want to give blood. I had always tought to of this idea , this is my chance , i was excited. He was talking too much , explaining what the procedure is all about , but i wasnt listening to him , i had been thinking of how many lives i will save. Once i had given blood , i passed out . I open my eyes i see someone with glasses that i can barely see his face , oh he is a doctor , he asked me if i had eaten something this morning . I took so long to answer ; no i hadn't eaten anything before i give blood . I realized that i had an appointment with you , i took my phone and started texting you this email . The nurse is calling my name right now , i have to go , if i need blood i will count on you .

    1. I finished class and WAITED.

I had been thinking of how many lives I WOULD SAVE.

Once I GAVE BLOOD (meaning, after I gave blood)

When I OPENED my eyes, I SAW someone with glasses WHOSE FACE I COULD barely see.

      ...before I GAVE blood.

Regarding my blood, isn't it enough that I give you my mind, heart, and soul in the class? Now you also want my blood?
