Listening #6: "Spaghetti Sauce and Happiness" (due Friday)
After listening to the lecture, explain the main idea and tell us what you learned. Take notes while you listen because you'll need them next week in class.
The Main Idea of the Lecture: If we wanna reach the true happiness we should first accept the diversity of human being.
Summarizing, we can learn from this lecture based in Herold's theory that if we want to improve something we should first consider all of its variety and learn from it then we'll be able to do this thing better.
Basically the lecture describes a parallel between industrial food and happiness by asking what people want to eat and what make them happy to eat. He shows us a variety of experiments and how the results were gathered by finding an important conclusion that among the differences we should embrace the diversity of human beings to find way for true happiness. There a lot of new paradigms but one catches more my attention and makes me think about, when he says that the concept of universal is changing, like "I don't want just to know how things happen in general, but I want to know how them affect on me". In short, how big things bring big effects, and also how we manage in our favor in order to be happy.
i think that the main idea about this video is not about happiness or food, the main idea is changing the way of how we approach things or ideas, accepting that every human being is different than any other in many ways, and providing all the existing options for those human beings would be the best way to profit, many people don't know what they like or how they like it, they go after a brand or price, thinking that this particular object is the best in the market. I learned that each person has unique way of thinking and needs a special way to interact with him\her, we should expand our horizons and think in a bigger way, as they say , " seeing the big picture ".
For my point of view, main idea is to make all the people happy is impossible. Every person has their own feelings. There is diversity in human beings. The lecturer basically talks about this controversial topic. He started with Pepsi and its sweetness; he states that there is no current satisfied amount of sugar percent for everybody. Then, he continued with Spagetti sauces in 1780s and he claimed that everybody prefer them in different tastes. At the end of the conversation he pointed about a question ‘‘What make people happy? ’’. If we want to reach the answer of this question we should focus on people and their different choices. We should search for universal to find most common answer.
In my opinion , the main purpose of the talk show is emphasizing in diversity of human being. Every single thing has different way to fit itself. There is no exact answer for what you want to be or what you can suitable with. The host tried to lead audiences think about how Howard change the Spagetti industry. Being success, Howard become the symbol of American in Food's industry. To sup up , solving problems, there are not only one way but also others.
There are three aspects that were really interesting for me. The first one was how deep the different researches about the food or beverages that we can find in any store are, and how vulnerable consumers are to this war of specialists. The second point is that we actually don’t know what we want. It’s difficult to do a self-evaluation and decide what we want, and what we are willing to do to get it; however, in my opinion if we are able to do this we are going to have less failures in the goals that we have and in the relations that we are in. Finally, the matter of diversity really caught my attention. As Howard Moskowits said, “Embracing diversity human beings we will find a sure way of the true happiness”, the individuality is more valuable than generalizations. It has made the civilization evolved on the concept of the differences that can be useful not to separate just to respect ourselves, respect who are around us, and finally to be completely happy, even when it just means to prefer a different kind of coffee.
The main idea of the lecture is that people don't know what they want but they have a way of finding true happiness by admitting and accepting other peoples diversity and differences (some people like thick spaghetti sauce some people like it thin) and that you should always try different ways to achieve your goal/happiness
main idea is to make all the people happy is impossible. so we should change the way of how we approach things or ideas.Every single thing has different way to fit itself. There is no exact answer for what you want to be or what you can suitable with. To persuade his opinion, he also put some experiences.
In the lecture Malcolm G explain how to find happiness through the food or anything else.He uses an example of a market researcher for a famous brand that creating spaghetti sauces.the goal of that was to find out which one make consumers happy.he found out that to offer a large options helped people to find their favorite one.Comparableness to the human being happiness where people don't really know what they want the acceptance of the variety and diversity help them to find the true happiness . In many point I agree with him but in some of them a have a different point of view. For example ,when he says that the price of a product doesn't make it better or worse It's not true because mostly high priced food mean better quality especially when it known that the price of a product is given according to the production cost.High production cost means high investment which mean usually researches for a better quality then for not to sell at a loss and to be able to release a margin the price will be consequent as the quality
It is the verities not just find one most acceptable thing to gain happy. We shouldn't focus just one thing like one best sauce, we need choices to choose.
I believe the main point is every human being has a different vision and a different attitude which are totally different from the other. With these differences we try to pursue the happiness. I agree with him. All of us have a kind of attitude and a vision which we believe is the best to achieve our goals, and these goals ensure our happiness.
In this talk, Malcolm Gladwell wants to emphasize the important role of "embracing the diversity of human beings" in success. He accessed the issue from 3 points: the public, the truth, and the thought of suppliers. First, Malcolm pointed out that humans had the natural psychology to not state exactly what they wanted. We tend to give more accurate answers if we are given more choices to decide. Those options are like hints, which indirectly bring us nearer to what we really want deep down in our mind. That, instead of responding to an open question which make us more confused and hard to determine, we just simply have to deal with some close- ended questions with the answers yes/ no only, is much easier. Second, the lecturer spoke up the fact that there was nothing better than another, the point was which one was more suitable to certain objects. Everybody has his own characteristics, personalities, thoughts, hobbies, weaknesses, etc. That's why the demand in every aspect of life is also very variable. The most valuable thing to one person absolutely can be worthless to another. The last illustration Malcolm gave us was the wrong assumption of suppliers about what made people happy. This linked directly to his second point. The vendors used to impose their conception of perfect products on customers without considering the difference among their clients, which made their products fail to reach a large number of supporters. In a nutshell, an interesting lesson to success was conveyed: the more people you want to touch, the more various needs you have to satisfy.
I believe that the main idea of this lecture is that in order to find happiness we should embrace the diversity of human being. According to Howard, we cannot think that everyone would like the same thing or that there is just one universal way to find happiness because there are endless possibilities to find it and each person has its own way. The same idea applies to the spaghetti sauce, howard did not want to find the perfect sauce everyone, actually the real issue was to find the perfect sauce for YOU that could truly make you happy. In general, this lecture make me understand that whenever we try to do something significant in our life we should stop for a moment and think what would really make us happy. Moreover, the fact that we should always try to think outside the box and that we should always use our creativity and originality to make everything better it is also implied in the message.
The main concept of the lecture given by Gladwell Is that there is not a unique guide to make people happy. Happiness is so relative to each person in order to Achieve that it You have to understand the diversity that surround us.
For me the main idea of this lecture is that happiness is some way connected with variety or diversity. None human being is equal to another and we all have different tastes, so the only way to keep everyone happy is being open to everyone's likes offering a variety of thought and options to choose. He gave some examples, like the one of the Campbell's tomato sauce and the one from Nescafe, explaining how they manage to have the world market offering a big diversity of flavors, because at the end everyone wants to choose freely and no one likes to be imposed an idea.
According to Gladwell the happiness is related with the variety. One of the example used to explain it was how Campbell's tomato sauce achieved success through variety of sauces. Being applied this theory in all aspects in our live, people will know what they want and attain the happiness and success; thus, they will learn that there is no only an unique way to get it.
