This is a 30-minute radio show on the topic of international adoptions. I know that its long, but I think its worthwhile to listen to because it recycles a lot of the language and terms involved with this topic.
After you listen, answer the following question:
According to what you hear, why do Americans seek adoptions abroad? List at least two reasons.
Also, any comments you'd like to make are welcome.
The content of this issue is very controversial, having so many children in US that need home, Americans go abroad to have a chance to increase their families.
ReplyDeleteAccording to this interview, the adoption process - domestically and international - basically are the same in terms of price and bureaucracy, however, Americans go abroad for adoption for some reasons:
First, it is not so easy to find American infants available as in other countries.
Second, domestically adoption requires a kind of birth family contact what the American family don't want, consequently, becoming the international process quickly.
Finally, there are some cases in communities that encourage other families to go abroad, seeing that the family who had adopted international child works well.
In conclusion, wherever the child comes from, it is important to embrace the adoption as a family that is increasing, not as philanthropy.
Americans usually adopt children because they want to increase their family's members or some of them adopt children because they can't have children.
ReplyDeleteIn United States there are some specific cases where family associations say that there are not children available to adopt unless they decide to go to foster homes first. In those cases people fell discourage by trying adoption domestically and because of that they decide to look abroad. Moreover, there are times that the process in America can be really tricky and the same associations encourage people to look for international adoption. On the other hand, The adoption system in the united states has been set up with the idea of unifying or reunited the adoptive families with the birth families and that is something that many people doesn't like. Some they don’t want any connection at all or at least until the adoptive family decide otherwise. Therefore, the close adoption is one of the greatest advantages offer by international adoption agencies.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to adoption, there are always many concerns about whether international adoption is reasonable or not. In this radio show, they interviewed some experts and listened to some cases of American families who have their children adopted abroad. One of the motivations for seeking for children in another country is the transparent policy. It doesn't matter where the kids come from, adopting families often go for any country that has an official process, which is easier for them to follow as well as shortening the waiting time. Moreover, it's inevitable that every adopting parents usually don't want their kids to grow up and reunite with their birth families. Thus, bringing a child far away from his/her home country can bring a gaping hole in the ability of birth family being involved in his/her life. However, because of the closed policies of some big source countries of international adoption, this trend in the US is on its way down.
ReplyDeleteAAccording to the lecture Americans adopt international kids because in America there is not that easy to
ReplyDeleteFind available kids to adopt. In both cases the process still being so long and is such the same with the policies of adoption. They prefer to adopt abroad because in America is a requirement that the kid has to keep contact with the biological family and the idea is to built a family without the idea that there are another parents that for
Any reason decided to not rise the kid.
One of the causes that leads Americans to seek international adoption is that in some cases some associations say they don't have adoptable kids, encouraging Americans to adopt international children. In addition, the American system of adoption encourages the contact between adoptive family and birth family, something that Americans dislike. In conclusion, International adoption is a big option for Americans families who are willing to add a new family member because it is easier and does't require to create bonds between them and his/her birth family.
ReplyDeleteTaking everything into account, international adoption is source of many debates.
ReplyDeleteAccording to this interview, the first (given by the woman married to the afro american) reason why americans tend to adopt international kids is the process which is more easy. However it is important to be sure that the adoption program involves the government program because skip some steps could increase corruption.
Secondly, another reason why americans adopt international student (Susan Sun) is the fact that in some poor countries, orphans need and deserve families, the most important is to move from the statut of orphans to the statut of family
Honestly, first I was bored when i started listening it, but after a moment of careful attention, I was really concerned that many children in the third world are suffering for not having a family. It 's very sorrowful to realize that while some adopt for rational reasons, others consider exploiting those adopted children in favor of their personal benefit engendering difficulty of adoptions. Anyway, I've learned through this listening that Americans adopt neither because of the exploitation nor because of the infertility, but rather they think of having a adopted ( a choice as all others ) . Having seen one of their family with an adorable adopted kid, parents often envy to obtain one as well.By adopting these parents are more likely to help one child among many screaming out in the obscurity which occurs in orphans located in the third world. Moreover, American parents sometimes wish to add a kid coming from another part of the world in order to share cultural changes, for no matter where children come from and where they have been raised, parents rest parents.

Being parents, they want to rise their children by their own, but with the law of American domestic adopting policy, which was made for kindness, and which is required birth family contact, may deprive this right. As a result, international adoption is a better choice that parents can fully embrace their children. Furthermore, it is much easier to adopt aboard, so most of American choose to have a foreign child.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time they decide for an international adoption because it is not easy to find a child available for an adoption in US.In addition, due to the adopting policy, they have to keep relations with the family of the child and usually they don't want .In contrary international adoption doesnt requires that because that possibility have already gone away. However the process still almost the same in the both cases.
ReplyDeleteHaving listened to the radio-show, we can say that the first cause of choosing international adoption country instead of adopting a child inside the US is the difficulty of finding a child than can be adopted inside the United States of America. Usually american people find more transparent to adopt a child abroad than in their own country, like the first woman who was interviewed, she said that when she adopt her Ethiopian child (the last one of them) she really found the adoption very "transparent" and that the process was very legal. Another cause of international adoption was given from the second woman that was interviewed, she said that the parents also adopt abroad because the world have to began to see it self like one big unit land without barriers and that the children are all the same, and the ones of the first world need a little bit more help than the others, she also said that we have to stop looking a child for a family and begin to find a family for the child.
ReplyDeleteamericans adopt abroad for 1- they might be told to foster to adopt 2- domestic is in fact slow 3- people already tried somewhere else but failed 4- its better to move the child to a rich country than to stay in a poor one.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the radio show the adoption process domestically and internationally is almost the same. However many American families have adopted international children for many reasons. First, they believe the children who are live in the third world countries need and deserve a better place. Second, in the United States families can not adopt infants. that's limit the potential of the domestic adoption.
ReplyDeleteWhy did some people adopt for international adoptions?
ReplyDeleteThat's a controversial question and answers may vary.
More often,at the beginning ,Americans who wanted children tried to adopt domestically but the process is usually complicated and long, which makes them go away, such as in Ethiopia,China or whatever country. In United States, the process is arduous. Most of time, parents don't have patience to wait.So they prefer to adopt abroad even though there are risks of corruption.
The second reason is that some parents need to help children from orphanages by finding them a family and the family could welcome a children. It's like kill two birds with one stone
The principal motive by people adopt abroad is because the process to adopt here in United States is because when there aren’t child available for adoption the adoption's office recommended be a fostered family and that means the possibility of loss the child in the future because the reunification of the child with his or her biological family could be painful situation for the fostered family. The process is more difficult than in others countries, and when the process fail here they try in other country. This adoption topic is really interesting for me, my youngest brother is adopted and he looks extremely different that my siblings and me, so at the beginning was difficult to him to understand why people asked if he was our really brother, he need a lot help and it was a complicated process for the whole family; now, it’s just a joke but this topic make me think that if that was complicated for him being from the same country I can’t imagine how difficult is for child on international adoptions.
